Short row shaping is great for tops that hug your curves. But if they aren't done correctly they can leave ugly holes. The trick is to pick up and knit the wrapped stitches on the last row, when you go back and knit up all the stitches you left behind on the short rows.

After you've finished your short rows you will have a line of wrapped stitches that looks like this. See those little necklaces around the neck of each stitch? Those are the wraps that you are going to pick up and knit.

When you get to a wrapped stitch (this might be every stitch, every other stitch or some other pattern), slip the point of your right needle under the wrap as shown.
Lift the wrap up and place it onto the tip of the left needle. It should be sitting beside the stitch it previously wrapped around as shown.
Next, knit through the back loop of BOTH stitches, knitting them together. Though it seems backwards to knit through the back, it will untwist the stitch you just picked up.
After being knit, your stitches should look fairly normal, like this.
As you can see, the finished short shows aren't invisible, but they don't leave huge, gaping holes like the first photo in this post.

This is great! Nowhere on the internet have I found how to knit a wrapped stitch. I was so confused b/c I kept ending up with 2 stitches (1 the wrap, the other the actual stitch) on my RH needle after knitting the wrapped stitch. I didn't think it could be right, but nothing else has mentioned slipping the wrap onto the LH needle next to the stitch it wrapped. THANK YOU!! Saved much frustration.
Thanks for this. Google led me here and this is great. Everytime I did it before it would look different b/c I was sort of making it up. This is perfect.
Thanks so much for this!! I have knit half an afghan, full of short-rows, knitting the wrap/wrapped stitch together through the front loop. Oh, well, at least 12 of the 24 squares will have properly knit short rows. But how do you do it purlwise? Do you also purl through the back loop?
Thanks!
To do it purlwise you move the wrap to the purl side (which is the same as when knitting, but now the purl side is in front) and just purl together like normal. Not through the back loop.
Thanks! I guess I have been doing it correctly when purling then, despite myself. That makes sense, since my short row "waves" (this pattern: http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall06/PATTlizardridge.html) look more or less normal on one side (when I've been picking up the wraps as I purl across) and weird on the other side (when I've been picking wraps up as I knit across--but knitting like normal, NOT through the back loop).
Thank you! I was turning the heel of a toe up sock and was completely lost, getting those big nasty holes. I tried to convince myself they were for decoration, but it wasn't working :-) Thanks again!
